Rendering and Formating
Why is the center column on all index pages (Main, Not-working, Working etc) much longer than the left and right ones? That looks like some calculation error :)

Maybe some rendering bug because not every browser (especially MSIE) renders CSS in the same way. Personally, I don't really care. :-)

This seems to be a bug in the MediaWiki software, it occurs on all systems and browsers and (almost) regardless of category contents. The reason is that the software seems to not count headlines when spacing the columns. Since you usually get a lot of items with the same starting letter (like "S" :o) this means that the third column might get 20 items with "S" alone, and the middle column might get 20 entries with 12 different starting letters. However, 20 entries plus 12 headlines take up much more space than 20 items plus one headline, thus one column appears longer than the others :)

Categorizing and Sorting Games
How does everyone think that games who's name start with "The" should be handled? It would be -really- nice if the auto-index here could be made to automatically ignore leading 'the's, but I don't think that that is possible. - Pacula 12:06, 11 Oct 2004 (CEST)
We currently have only three, so I think it is not (yet) a problem. But I see what you mean. (Likewise, almost nobody will find Morrowind under the official title :-)
Here is another RFC I have: The "Games" Category becomes rather full. I fear it will become too big very soon. We could do some things to combat this:
- 1.: create a new Category:Mods (counter strike, alien schwarm etc). That should be additional, probably, though. (E.g. users look for the game counter strike, not for the mod counter strike, so we need probably to leave mods in games, too. So it wouldn't really help.)
- 2.: create a new Category:Title and sort all sequels/prequels/parts of a game to it. For instance, Move "Command & Conquer" to "Command & Conquer (Original)" (and leave it in "Game") and then add "Command & Conquer" in the category "Title" (speling?) and list on it all the different C&C titles. The reason behind this is that we then could have a category:title list (which should be considerable shorter (about 50% if we assume two games per title) than the full blown game list). One question for me as non-native speaker: Which is the "game" and which is the "title"?
- 3.: or create pages that list all games starting with A,B,C etc. Maybe add Category:Games_Starting_A (what an ugly name)
Personally, I like points 1 (even though it won't make the games list shorter unless we do not sort mods under games) and 2. 3 seems rather a lot of work (touching all games created so far) and ugly. Point 3 has the nice effect that "Elder Scrolls, The" can be in "Games_Starting_With_E" instead of "Games_Starting_With_T" :)
Categories and sub-categories can be created on the fly, so we can experiment.
Opinions welcome :) Tels 23:36, 11 Oct 2004 (CEST)
I like the idea of having a seperate category for mods, and also think we should have another one for expansions. There's also no reason why something couldn't be in multiple categories - Counterstrike for example is both a mod for Half-Life and a stand-alone game.
However, I do not at ALL like this 'titles' category idea. It's not really a good way to condense the list - all it would be doing is taking all the games in a particular series and putting them together as one list entry.
That said, maybe there is a way to put games of the same series together in a meaningful way. If we create a category for each particular series of games, and then put these categories in a category themselves (Category:Series) that could work. This 'game series' category would contain just a list of the various series.
- Pacula 00:11, 12 Oct 2004 (CEST)
I think you said essentially the same as me, instead that you put "series" instead of "title" :) Note especially if you view Category:Series, you would get the same condensend list as with my title idea (e.g. to quote you it would "taking all the games in a particular series and putting them together as one list entry" :-) The advantage of (your idea of) just adding more category entries per game is that we don't have to move games. So, if we agree upon this, I'll go through the list and add the proper categories (starting with "my" games first).
Like the mod and expansion category idea - and as I wrote games can/should be in multiple categories (sorry if that was unclear from my ramblings!).

One small nit: I think the [[:Category:Homeworld_Series]] should really be "Category::Homeworld" because otherwise the Category:Series page lists all entries with the ugly (since unec.) "Series" postfix. I think it (the "_Series" postfix) can be safely dropped, because the "Category:Homeworld" already puts this page into a different namespace ("Category") than the normal Homeworld page. Wikipedia says "don't code the category tree into the category name", and I think that putting "Series" into the category name amounts to that. Did that comment make sense? :)
Tels 17:56, 12 Oct 2004 (CEST)
I guess I misunderstood a couple things. For one, I had the impression that you wanted to take games OUT of the games category, and just have the series listed there for games that were part of a series. I didn't like that idea at all, but having a seperate grouping away from the main game page seemed like something worth doing.
Also, I apologize for changing the Star Wars category name on you. If the proper 'wiki way' is to avoid putting allusions to the category name in subcategories, then so be it. :)

Well, here it is. After some hacking around in the PHP files, I managed to get it to work. =) Alphabetical link lists on the category pages.
Case closed. ;-)

Omega: Ultrasweet! Thanx a lot! Make sure to pass the change back to the WikiMedia guys and gals #:o)=
Pacula: No offence taken :o)

The alphabetical links could be made a little cleaner if you used the fullurl template. So instead of using
[http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/index.php?title=Category:Games&from=F F]you could use
[{{fullurl:Category:Games|from=F}} F].
Additionally, if you wrap the entire list of alpha links in <span style="plainlinks">...</span>it will remove the arrow images which indicate an external link. The list of links could then be more esthetically delineated with colons or hyphens or something.

Spelling
"View all games that are offcially supported by TransGaming"
Should be officially.
