Issues

  • The demo version crashes after choosing a birthdate, no matter what date is chosen.
  • The license agreement cannot easily be passed, as apparently the trigger at the bottom of the EULA isn't working, hence accept can never be selected. This can be bypassed by clicking the agreement and pressing ENTER, or by scrolling inside the textfield with the mouse, upon which the agreement can be accepted.
  • The full DVD version from the Gold edition can be able to be installed, although:
    • it will prompt for and install DirectX 9.0c (August).
    • The installation of the full version can take quite some time (>30minutes).
    • The DVD installer does not create the shortcuts when you select [X] Yes I want to register F.E.A.R.. Either deselect this option at the end of the install, or let the patch v1.08 create these icons for you.
    • The game from the DVD Gold Edition did never start for me.
  • You may need to turn off shadows or the graphics become corrupted.

Installation

Use an original v1.00 retail disk.
Gold and Platinum installation disks have been patched.

Run the install with all default settings.
Note: If you have a Xinerama setup, then set the Desktop to be a fixed size, since the background image likes to span both monitors.

At the license agreement, the scroll bar is non-functional, so click inside the text box and simply scroll down with the keyboard until the "I accept..." radio button becomes available.

The installation will prompt you to install DirectX. Say 'yes' here, since if you say 'no' it will abort the install.

After the files are copied, if you are running the installer in a Desktop window, it will open another window running DXSETUP. Ignore this and continue with the primary window.

GameSpy Arcade. While this program may work, choose "No, install GameSpy Arcade later."

At the Setup Register step, the screen was a little malformed. The checkbox to register FEAR online is checked by default. Even though you can't see the actual checkbox, you should be able to click on the words that are linked to it to uncheck it. My display showed "o register FEAR."

Clicking Finish will end the installation.

Before you launch the game, there are a couple more things to do.

  1. Place a copy of d3dx9_27.dll in the game directory or in windows/system32
  2. Apply a no-cd crack to the game.
  3. Change a few settings in Cedega for the F.E.A.R. shortcut.
   Graphics
     Pixel Shaders: 2.0
     Vertex Shaders: 2.0

OPTIONAL

  1. Disable Movies in the configuration utility. This only disables the movies that are shown when launching the game. It does not affect the cutscenes that are shown while playing the game.

You should now be ready to start the game.

Upon first start, it will automatically detect a few settings. These may or may not be accurate to what your card can actually handle. Set the Computer and Graphics Card settings to the level you desire. Then make sure two settings are at a specific level.

Advanced Video Card Options -> Graphics
   Enable Shadows: Off
   Texture Resolution: Minimum

Note: Discussion on Texture Resolution

Optionally, if you want to test running the game at a custom resolution, this would be the time to do it. This can be done by editting the file "<GAME FOLDER DIR>/Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents/Monolith Productions/FEAR/settings.cfg".

You can now use Test Settings to see what performance you will receive in game. Once you are satisfied with your FPS, you are ready to start killing things.

Other things that don't work quite right.

Options -> Controls -> Configure Controls
Configure Controls does not display what keyboard keys are currently bound to a particular action. This will have an additional effect on certain in game prompts which inform you how to perform an action. Rather than display the key, it will show <key unassigned>. It will display what mouse buttons are bound, and if an action is currently [unassigned]. The Configure Controls does function. So you can use it to change your keys bindings. The default key bindings are printed in the manual which comes with the game.

Quit prompt
When you select Quit from any quit button in the game, it will bring up the Quit prompt. The mouse detection over the "No" option does not work and clicking on it will instead select "Yes", which is the default. If clicked quit by accident or you changed your mind, press ESC to continue playing.
Cedega 6.0.4 Snudda: The quit prompt works with the latest beta release.

Problems with sound and crashing to desktop

Some of the levels reference MP3 files that are stored in the Arch00 files. Some of these files cause the game to crash. A temporary fix is available through the use of the mod file no_mp3.Arch00. This file contains a silent wave file of less than one second in length which will disable the problem files when they are referenced in the game.

Place this file in the FEAR game directory. Then you will need to edit the file "Default.archcfg".

With a version 1.00 install, after editing, it should look like this:

   FEAR.Arch00
   FEARA.Arch00
   FEARL.Arch00
   FEARE.Arch00
   no_mp3.Arch00
