Issues
- Videos are extremly choppy and can cause the game to crash or freeze
- Sound can also be a bit iffy
- Demo tends to crash.
- When calling the program it complains that it misses MSXML support from the Internet Explorer (see work-around.)
- When you finish a game, you can't upload the results to the Metaverse.
- You can't do quickie patches via StarDock Central and TotalGaming.net
- There doesn't appear to be any way to get the map or scenario editors to work.
WorkArounds
When you see an in-game video start up, it is best to tap the mouse button to skip it. The more time you spend watchinging them, the more likely the game is to freeze.
Hand edit the GalCiv configuration file. On my install, this is: ~/.cedega/GalCiv/c_drive/Program Files/Strategy First/Galactic Civilizations/Data/Prefs.ini
The file for the GalCiv Altarian Prophecy expansion pack is at: ~/.cedega/GalCiv/c_drive/Program Files/Strategy First/AltarianProphecy/Data/Prefs.ini
Under the [GameOptions] heading, I set:
- DisableSfx=1
- DisableMusic=1
- HyperthreadEnhancement=0
- ThreadedInitialLoading=0
You can avoid the MSXML complaints on AltarianProphecy by bypassing the initial menu program. Normally, it loads gcloader.exe If you change it to load GalCiv.exe you can play the game. I did this by hand editing: ~/.cedega/GalCiv/games.ini and the accompaning ~/.cedega/GalCiv/Galactic Civilizations - The Altarian Prophecy.config
